Alexander's first battle against the Persians was at the Granicus River. Needless to say, it was a resounding victory for the Greeks - but for a while it was touch-and-go with the fearsome phalanx halted by the steep banks of the stream.

Click on the "Info" link for an article from Diggings magazine about the historical background to the battle.

The "More info" link takes you to Amazon for a biography of Alexander the Great. My favourite biography is by Harold Lamb, but that was published back in 1946 and is no longer in print.
