The Dog River is a beauty spot and a fascinating archaeological site

The Dog River (Arabic, Nahr el-Kelb) is a fascinating site. Not only is it a dramatic deep corge - the Lebanon has plenty of those - but at its mouth there are some interesting historical remains. Perhaps most interesting of all, those remains are being added to all the time, so it will remain of interest far into the future.

Unfortunately, the site has just about been swallowed up by Beirut, which has expanded vastly since the civil war. When I first visited the Dog River thirty years ago, it was way out in the countryside, disturbed only by the occasional car or truck heading along the coast road. Now the roar of traffic is continuous and it is impossible to get a picture of the gorge that does not include a house or two.
