Trevi Fountain

There's a legend - probably as old as the start of the tourist boom - which states that if you toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, you will certainly return to Rome. Being an ardent hater of spaghetti and none too enamoured of the noise, dirt and discourtesy that characterise Rome, I have sedulously avoided contributing any of my money to whoever it is that regularly empties the fountain.

Hasn't stopped me going back to Rome, though.

On my last visit, I led my group through the soft, warm, Italian night (it was chilly, had been raining and the streets were littered with garbage) to view the flood-lit Colosseum. On the way we passed the Trevi Fountain which, much to my surprise, was almost as crowded and busy as it had been during daylight hours. It looked so attractive that I filmed it from various angles and also filmed the (mostly American) young persons (mainly female) who were tossing coins into the fountain. Mind you, I only saw one girl actually toss a coin; the rest seemed to be just going through the motions for the sake of friends with cameras. Perhaps I'm not the only one who finds pasta tasteless and detestable.
