The name of Dr Samuel Johnson is inextricably linked with his great dictionary and most people can quote one or another of the great man's sayings. However I'll bet that few know that he was born in Lichfield or that his father had a rather smelly factory, or that Dr Johnson had to humble himself in old age for his pride when young.

In this film we briefly visit Johnson's birthplace (which, despite what it says in the film, does have an admission charge: it is the book shop which is free) and see the famous dictionary, then visit the tree under which he courted, and finish off with a visit to Uttoxeter.
