The wonderful altar screen in Cawston church |
Norfolk is full of charming little villages, many of them set beside a broad or lake. Each village is built around a pub (or two!) and a church - but some of the churches are magnificent structures, far larger than is warranted by the size of the village.
One such is Cawston parish church, a huge edifice that would be more at home in a large town or even a city. Inside the building is fascinating, with relics of the middle ages in every nook and cranny. This film picks out a few of the high-lights from the church - the saint with glasses, the blessed plough, and the crusaders' poor box, among others.
No doubt keeping such a large church in trim is a real burden to the good people of Cawston, so if this film inspires you to visit the place, may I wish you better weather than I enjoyed, and urge you to give generously so that this building can continue to delight visitors and pilgrims for generations to come. <
