Caister-on-Sea Roman Fort

Some sites are huge and sprawling and cost a good deal of time and effort to get to them - and when you get there, they are hardly worth looking at. The Roman fort at Caister-on-Sea is small and only partially excavated (but it is difficult to find!) yet it is really quite fascinating.

Caister-on-Sea is a small town just to the north of Great Yarmouth, it has a lovely beach and an interesting lifeboat station, but that is about all - apart from the Roman fort. Unfortunately, the sign to the fort sends you up into a housing estate where no one has ever heard of the Roman fort (and, I suspect, has never heard of the Romans either). In fact the fort is on the main road and you can park in a small lay-by.

Don't go up the housing estate: that way madness lies.
