The Templars' Temple

Temple church is tucked away down a little alley off Fleet Street and unless you have a guide or know what you are looking for, it is only too easy to miss it. Which would be a shame, as it is one of the jewels of London.

Like many another church built by the Knights Templars, the church has a round nave (the altar is house in the rectangular part of the church). This, it seems, was done in memory or imitation of the Order's headquarters in Jerusalem, which were centred on the octagonal Dome of the Rock - which it is possible the original knights actually believed to be Solomon's temple!

Inside the church are numerous graves of knights and commanders of the British branch of the knights. I've been in there and taken photographs in the happier days when entry was free and the only difficulty was finding the church open. Nowadays there is an admission charge and given that this is the church frequented by lawyers, the charge is not cheap.
