The Pinnacles

The amazing but mysterious Pinnacles in West Australia

It took us the best part of a day to drive north from Perth in our hired campervan. Not that we minded, for the road was rendered fascinating by forests of "black boy" (the not very PC name my wife knew the trees by), enormous sand dunes of glistening white, and views over the sparkling blue sea. Still, it was too late to visit the Pinnacles by the time we reached them and we spent the night in the only camp site in Cervantes.

In the morning we drove back to the turn-off, ignored the visitor centre (which was still locked shut) and simultaneously ran out of bitumen and discovered the first of the Pinnacles.

The bitumen was a worry, as we weren't supposed to drive off-road in our van, but I'm afraid we turned a Nelsonian eye to that clause in the agreement and set off round what turned out to be a circle round the best of the Pinnacles. Our first time round we stopped at every widening of the road and photographed everything in sight, but then for our second circuit we set the dash-cam running and didn't stop. (Hence the flickering numbers at bottom left of the video.)

There was a moment when we spotted another car ahead of us and feared that our filming would be ruined, but fortunately they stopped - as we had done - and we shot past them and carried on round.

Enjoy!
