Quebec

It was noticeable, in our travels around Canada, that everywhere you go the authorities try to cater to those unfortunate enough to speak French. Road signs and official proclamations are all in both English and French. Cross the border into Quebec, however, and the surly frog-eaters will have no truck with such PC nonsense. Road signs, official notices, people from whom you ask directions, are all in French and nothing but French.

Mind you, rudeness always was a French speciality ...

It is, perhaps, this inability to speak another language which led to the curious statement, embossed in bronze, that the heroic damsel of Vercheres was "alone", for she was anything but, as her own account makes plain.
