Hinemoa and Tutanaki

The island of Mokola is in the middle of Lake Rotorua

I've known the story of Hinemoa and Tutanakai as far back as I can remember, for it is one of New Zealand's most famous love stories. Of course, such are the vagaries of oral transmission that the version I was taught varies in a few details from the one that was on the signposts in Rotorua, but that one varied from the one that we were told at the Maori concert at Te Puia, so if you know one that is slightly different again, I wouldn't worry about it.

It was interesting to see the location of the story and I can now visualise it much better. I'll have to re-tell it to my children and grand-children now.
