Dunedin

Situated at the head of a long inlet which must be one of the world's best harbours, Dunedin is a charming town that makes a perfect base for exploring the wonders of the southern part of New Zealand's South Island. The southern-most point is a day trip away, the wonders of fjord-land and Milford Sound are a day's drive away, and another day trip will take you the playground of Queenstown and the gold mines of Arrowtown.

However Dunedin is a tourist attraction in its own right, with a wonderful albatross and penguin sanctuary at the tip of the peninsula, a world-famous train journey up a beautiful gorge, and a place in the Guiness Book of Records for the world's steepest street.
