Calcutta - Cry of the Leper

The horrifying sight and sound of a leper, at once begging for alms and warning people to stay away, begins this section of the film. We then go on to other beggers and street scenes from this busy Indian city.

Although there are still lepers on the streets of India, they are no longer without hope. A Christian missionary, Dr Paul Brand, is responsible for observations and treatments which mean that lepers no longer need to fear losing fingers, noses or toes. Other dedicated individuals have pioneered medicines that have revolutionised the prospect facing those unfortunate enough to contract this disease.
