Calcutta - Transport

Even back in 1954 Calcutta was a crowded city (today it is simply frenetic!) - and all those people needed to travel and have things brought to them or taken away. This snippet from the Rev Down's film shows us the wide variety of vehicles which served the city's needs: trucks, trains, trams, cars, buses and then the particularly eastern ones - rickshaws, handcarts, horse-drawn carriages, bullock carts, and men and women with baskets on their heads.

Mind you, even the modern means of transport have an Indian flavour: look at the crowds hanging out of the buses and trams!
