The first vicar of Leicester's Folly found fame by translating the Bible into Welsh. |
Of all the colourful characters the thronged the court of Elizabeth I, none was more vain and swaggering than Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester and favourite of the Virgin Queen. In fact, it was even claimed that Robert had come very close to conquering that famed virginity!
Elizabeth showered favours on young Robert, an earldom and the town of Denbigh, in Wales, which Robert promptly set about improving - and among the improvements was a huge cathedral that would put ancient St Asaph into the shade.
Robert's fortunes waned somewhat when he remarried, although he remained a royal favourite to his death. However his grand project for the cathedral was never completed and the line of arches as known locally as "Leicester's Folly".
