The Shetlands have some of the wildest and most dramatic scenery in Britain |
This film is really a slide show, but I am grateful to the Rev Peter Jeynes for his trouble. Peter is a keen cyclist - so keen that he has actually been booked for speeding on his bike! - and recently went on a tour of the Shetland Islands. I was particularly impressed at how close he got to the puffins.
I recently did my own tour of the Shetlands and was fascinated by its incredible scenery, such as the tombolo that features in the next film. (There is actually one island with a double tombolo, but rain and low cloud prevented me visiting it.)
The Shetlands are full of fascinating stories, but none more so than the incredible adventure that befell Betty Mouat, stranded on board a disabled sailboat with two biscuits and a quart bottle of milk!
The Shetlands are home to the most complete broch in the world. You can climb up the internal staircase and stand on the narrow walkway that circles the summit. The ferries used to sail past the island of Mousa to give passengers an unrivalled view until some idiot in an inflatable deliberately blocked the ferry. Now they sail round the outside and you are lucky if you get a glimpse of the broch in the distance. I hope the idiot came to a bad end.
