Wheeldale Moor

The Roman road on Wheeldale Moor*
The Roman road on Wheeldale Moor

This has to be one of the best kept secrets on the North York Moors. The sign on the A69 points in the wrong direction and if you can overcome that initial difficulty, you find that the other signs direct you up a dead end road. Admittedly you can walk several miles from there to the Roman road, but if you are in a hurry or not sure what a Roman road looks like, there is an awful lot of Wheeldale Moor over which to wander!

We were lucky on our visit back in 2001. We happened to meet an archaeologist who very kindly directed us to the place where the Roman road crosses the modern road. I asked her to give a short talk to camera and she was willing until I mentioned that we broadcast over the Internet. A look of horror came over her face and she backed away stuttering excuses - you'd have thought I was asking her to pose naked while murdering her grandmother. I take it that they are somewhat primitive up in Yorkshire!

Anyway, we finally located the Roman road, something I have wanted to see ever since I first heard about it while toiling over the moors on the Lyke Wake Walk forty-odd years ago. Enjoy.
