In order to make the work of digging the canals easier, they were made narrow - and the locks narrower still. A narrow boat is 70' long and 7' wide and by appearances a lock is only about 7'6" wide!

People in Britain may not be too interested in this film; we probably have all seen a boat passing through a lock. For those outside the country however, the process of how a boat climbs hills may be of interest, so this film starts off with an animated sequence that shows how a lock works, then continues with scenes of a narrow boat passing up Kinver Lock.
