If I heard about Offa's dyke before coming to Wales, I have no recollection of it. Once here, however, it is a fairly prominent feature, both on the landscape and in the national consciousness.

A massive earthwork, designed to demarcate the boundary between the Welsh and their hereditary enemies, a border which has been ignored in the gradual westward spread of the English, a barrier imposed on a free people by their oppressors, Offa's Dyke is all of those things and more. As the film shows, it also has a curious connection with the tithe barns that dot the landscape of England.

There's nothing quite so curious as the accidents of history.
