The Angel of the North

The Angel of the North

This, I'm afraid, is where I get into trouble. The people of Gateshead are rightly proud of their angel, as you can see if you visit the Gateshead website, so for me to list it under "Durham" is probably lese majeste or something. In extenuation I point to the fact that Gateshead is a modern invention and who can tell whether it will survive the next government reorganisation?

The angel, which was erected in 1998, is made of 200 tons of steel; it stands 65 feet high and has a wingspan of 175 feet - almost as big as a jumbo jet!

Striking though it is, it is pretty tame compared to the angels it brings to my mind - three angels with what is probably the most important message of warning ever given to mankind.
