The amazing twisted spire on Chesterfield church

There's nothing really remarkable about Chesterfield - miles of dreary suburbs and decaying industry - until you reach the centre of town and catch a glimpse of the incredible church spire. I'd heard about it and deliberately went looking, but even so I could hardly believe my eyes!

Allegedly the result of using unseasoned timber in the spire, no one is sure whether it was carelessness, haste, ignorance, or a contractor on the make, but the result took years to become visible and those responsible never did have to face up to their wrong-doing.
