Roman Forts in Lakeland

Looking down Hardknott Pass towards
the Irish Sea

There are a number of Roman remains in the Lake District, but three legionary fortresses stand out. They are Ravenglass, where the Romans prepared to invade Ireland; Hardknott Castle, in one of the most dramatic settings anywhere in the world; and Ambleside, where Flavius Romanus, a 35-year old clerk, met a violent end in the safety of the Roman fort!

I have tried to give an impression of the beauty and wildness of the Lake District in this film, but really, you have to go there yourself to truly appreciate it. We can recommend Stonecross Manor, in Kendal, for its pleasant and attentive staff and its excellent breakfasts.

Thanks to Kendal Museum and its friendly staff for permission to photograph the Flavius Romanus tomb stone. I understand that they have only recently adopted the enlightened policy of allowing photography in the museum, for which they are to be congratulated.
