Saffron Walden

	The turf maze from the air

Saffron Walden is a charming little town - really, an overgrown village with an extra large village green. It rose to prosperity through growing saffron, hence the name. I used to drive through it fairly regularly at one time, yet in all those visits I never realised that there was a castle tucked away down a back street!

In this film, however, we concentrate on one of its most ancient parts, the turf maze which is located on one side of the village green. I have only once walked the whole thing and I must admit that by the end, the alleged feelings of calm and peace gained from the exercise were notable by their absence. I could well believe that it was a particularly effectual penance imposed on mediaeval sinners!
