St Peter's Church

A fascinating little church, now alas, unused

As you drive into Cambridge from the north, it is only too easy to miss this little church, which stands on a small eminence set back from the road. Unfortunately it seems that the local people also miss it, because it is now unused and its future is in doubt.

When I investigated it I was lucky enough to find it open - and what a treasure it is! A mediaeval font that bears witness to the ancient method of baptism, and a mermaid hiding on top of a pillar, are two of the fascinating details that delight the discerning visitor.

It is always sad to see these buildings, erected centuries ago with love and care, now neglected by people whose priorities are the transient follies of television soaps and the even more transient "good times" of parties and discos. Even more to be pitied are those who are "too busy", for they, above all, need the peace and quiet of worship to give them strength and purpose for their daily tasks.
