Some of the grandest music ever written is on religious themes: one has only to think of the Hallelujah Chorus or Zadok the Priest. Of course, there has also been an awful lot of doggerel, where words or tune or both have been tacky and horrible, but fortunately nearly all of these have sunk rapidly and without trace.
